Step OneSwallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people. Repeat up to 3 more times at 2-minute intervals if necessary.
2Step TwoGulp down a glass of water if the sugar doesn't work.
3Step ThreeSlowly eat a piece of dry bread.
4Step FourBreathe in and out of a paper bag. Do not use a plastic bag under any circumstances, and don't do this longer than 1 minute.
5Step FiveGargle with water (see 'How to Gargle').
6Step SixRepeat the above steps until your hiccups stop.
You hiccup when your diaphragm goes into spasm.A method we use in the hospital that works very well is take a slow, deep breath in through pursed lips. (like your puckering up to kiss someone) Contolling it as you breath in. And slowly, slowly blow it out through your lips.Keep on doing this a few times.The hiccups will stop or slow down as it stops the repeative spasm.
